Retail Design Institute Southern California – Student Challenge ‘Beauty’
Students, members and colleagues of the Retail Design Institute Southern California Chapter recently met at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Downtown Santa Monica for the annual “Student Design Challenge,” which was held on November 13th.
In recognition of the Institutes’ 2014 International Student Store Design Competition (‘Beauty’) and concurrent with LA Fashion Week, this year’s challenge was an opportunity to explore the world of beauty and bring it to life in a retail environment; each of the students was tasked with creating a new concept salon for Vidal Sassoon. Creative leaders from the Vidal Sassoon Academy were on hand to give the students an introduction to the values and history of the brand, which helped spark some ideas.
The students were assigned a mentor from the design/retail industry who helped guide the work throughout the afternoon. The day of brainstorming was then followed by an evening review of the designs, and the final two teams were then selected and had a short amount of time to produce a model. Once the winner had been chosen, the students then had a chance to relax and network among fellow members and friends of the Institute.
In the end, the teams were judged on expression of the brand, engagement of the senses, innovative use of materials, integration of communication, graphics, and other specific retail disciplines where relevant.
Students from various local schools including Cal State Long Beach, Art Center College, SMC, and USC attended and participated, and each team came up with a concept that was truly impressive.
For members of the RDI, the event was a chance to evaluate emerging design talent and give back to the growing design community in LA. For students, it was an invaluable opportunity to meet with seasoned professionals from leading design firms and internationally recognized brands such as BCBG, Gensler, Guess, Forever 21 & others.
All in all, it was a great night, with delicious appetizers and drinks to go around. The evening was sponsored by the Sassoon Academy and Glow.

October has come and gone, and it was another fun and busy month with multiple projects back to back at Brand Licensing Europe in London, Sportel in Monaco, and MIPCOM in Cannes.
Here’s a few snapshots of the new work we did this year, including some totally new projects and a couple of redesigns:
October is always a big month for us, as we have three exhibitions falling back to back with several projects at each show. Over the next few weeks most of us will be in and out of the office, on site with clients at:
Brand Licensing Europe in London, Olympia Exhibition Centre, October 7-9
Sportel in Monaco, Grimaldi Forum, October 7-10
MIPCOM Market in Cannes, Palais des Festival, October 13-16
It’s going to be a busy few weeks and we’re looking forward to getting started on all of the builds and some exciting new projects. If you are on site at any of the exhibitions, please come by one of our stands and say hello. Stay tuned for more updates, photos, and more!
Our work for Universal at last month’s Licensing Expo in Las Vegas has been selected as a featured project on the Retail Design Blog! Thanks again to the RDB, who have been kind enough to feature three of our projects this year, including our store design for I.Martin Bicycles in Los Angeles and our booth design for Viacom at MIPCOM in Cannes, France.
Check out the full story here.
We’re back from Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, and it was a great show for both of our clients, Universal and DHX. The show, which aims to connect “the worlds’ most influential entertainment, character, fashion, art and corporate brand owners with consumer goods manufacturers, licensees and retailers,” is always an exciting project for us to be a part of. This year, our booth for Universal featured several sleek new updates, including a touch screen interactive ‘Minions’ game, eight updated meeting suites and conference rooms, new finishes, and more.
Here’s a few new shots of the booth. Enjoy!
LA Screenings, an annual sales event for entertainment program buyers, was held May 13-16 at the Hyatt Century Plaza here in Los Angeles. We were lucky enough to be a part of the project, designing and installing multiple hospitality suites for our client, Viacom.
Overall, it was a fun project and always nice to complete a job right in our own back yard! Here’s a few more shots of the suites:
James is the featured profile on ‘My Event World’ for the June issue of Event Magazine! Thanks to the team at Event…it’s a big honor, and another exciting addition to our accomplishments thus far in 2014.
