RDI ‘Student Portfolio Review’ Wrap Up 2014

Students, members and colleagues of the Retail Design Institute Southern California Chapter met at the Gensler office space in Downtown Los Angeles for the annual “Student Portfolio Review,” which was held on April 30th.

Following the success of this extremely popular event last year, the evening did not disappoint, giving the professionals and students a chance to swap ideas and make introductions through a creative ‘speed dating’ style review of creative work.

Students nearing graduation from various Southern Callifornia schools (including Cal State Long Beach, Art Center College, and USC, among others) attended, along with several participating mentors and professionals throughout the local design industry.  The evening was open to all disciplines related to the practice of retail design, including Architecture, Planning, Interior Design, Exhibition Design, Graphic Design, Visual Merchandising, Set Decorating, Digital and Interactive Design.

For many members of the RDI, the event was a chance to evaluate emerging design talent and to potentially add energetic new additions to their studios.  For students, it was an invaluable opportunity to meet with seasoned professionals from leading design firms and to receive feedback on their portfolios before graduating.

All in all, it was a great night, with plenty of drinks to go around and delicious Australian-themed food from the Downtown LA artisan pie shop, The Bronzed Aussie.

New video: A background look at our Endemol stand at MIPTV 2014

Since sometimes it can be hard to convey exactly what an “exhibition designer” does on the job, one of the best ways to truly get the essence of what we do is to see it first-hand!

When we undertake a large exhibition like MIPTV, we’ve got numerous stands going up at once and there’s a lot to consider.  It’s a pretty fascinating process to see how quickly some of these massive stands can come together, especially after the months and months of designing and planning that lead up to the actual show.

Here’s a short video of our Founder and Creative Director, James, talking about our stand for Endemol at this past MIPTV market in Cannes, France.  Hope you enjoy a little behind-the-scenes peek, and also check it out on our Vimeo page.

MIPTV Wrap Up 2014

We’re back (and slowly recovering) from Cannes, and it was another great year at MIPTV.  All of our builds went off without a hitch, and our clients were left feeling happy after many successful meetings, presentations, and sun-drenched days busy on the French Riviera.

Along with all of our builds, a few of the other highlights were cocktail parties on our stands for Viacom, NBCUniversal, and Scripps.

At the Viacom cocktail, we were lucky enough to have our stand visited by none other than the amazing Ms. Amy Poehler, who was on site to promote her new Comedy Central series, ‘Broad City.’

All in all, it was a very successful market and we’ll be back on site again before we know it for MIPCOM in October!

This year, NAB will bring attendees from 156 countries and over 1,500 exhibitors to Las Vegas, and we will be onsite with our client, Interdigital!

Between work and maybe a little play, we’re looking forward to having some time to check out the show.  If you’re attending, be sure to stop by the Interdigital booth to say hello!

It’s that time of year again…we’re off to MIPTV in Cannes

MIPTV is the world’s most-established TV and digital content market, serving as the biggest gathering of entertainment industry professionals. This marks the 51st year of MIP, with top television execs and creative talent from over 100 countries converging in Cannes, France to develop partnerships, seal international distribution deals, and come up with ideas for the year ahead.  The show is held at The Palais on the marina in downtown Cannes (we know, we know, rough place to work) Monday through Thursday, April 7 – 10.

For us, the MIPTV and MIPCOM (held in October) markets mark two of our biggest exhibitions all year, and we always bring a big presence to both shows.  At this year’s MIPTV, we will design, build, and manage stands for ten exhibiting companies, including our amazing clients Viacom and NBCUniversal (check out the video links for a behind-the-scenes view of what goes into a show like MIPTV!).

It’s going to be a great time onsite, and members of the Glow team will be present for the build, the show, as well as the de-installation.  If you happen to be at MIPTV, stop by one of our booths to find us and say hello!

Universal presentation at the Walmart headquarters for ‘The Minions’ movie and ‘Jurassic World’

It’s not every day that we find ourselves in Bentonville, Arkansas. However, when our client Universal asked us to help them present their upcoming film properties, ‘The Minions’ and ‘Jurassic World,’ to Walmart at their headquarters in Bentonville, we jumped at the chance.

Both films are slated for release in 2015, and we like to think our presentation gave the folks at Walmart a little taste of that Universal/LA movie magic.

As you can see from the pics below, the presentations went off without a hitch and made quite the impression.  So, moral of the story is, if anyone needs a last minute event producer, exhibit designer, or even a life-size-dinosaur-head-modeler or minion suit model (ok, we weren’t actually inside the suits), you know who to call…

New Design for I.Martin Bicycle Shop – Los Angeles

I.Martin, a sister store of the LA staple Helen’s Cycles, has been revamped with an updated design by – you guessed it – none other than Glow!

The shop, located on Beverly Drive, was a fun project to work on right in our own backyard, yet the design challenge was to merge two different store units and bring the experienced sales staff front and center. The entire interior, including walls, ceiling and service were finished in a single color.

Paired with this was reclaimed oak beams and wood effect laminate to allow a background that let the bikes stand out. A more centralized checkout finished in strips of old oak beams was positioned near the front door, allowing for better interaction with the customers.

The company’s corporate colors of black, yellow and orange were introduced into the flooring and upholstery accents, and custom pendant lights made from spokes, hubs and chains hang over the checkout area. The idea of reusing existing materials was to  reference the nearly 30-year-old brand yet add a more modern feel.

Check out the gallery above for some interior shots of the new I.Martin shop design.
